Introduction
Springfield Fellwalking club was formed in
1966 and has just celebrated its 39th anniversary. Over the
years, the club has established a format that has resulted in many enjoyable
walks. With several decades of experience, the club knows some fantastic
locations that you may never think about visiting! The club has
approximately 100 members, many of whom are regular walkers with the
club. Membership is fairly evenly split between the sexes, with ages
ranging from children to over 80’s.
The club's regular day walks (24 per year)
take place on Saturdays, with a coach picking up at various stops from
Blackpool to Preston. Locations visited include the Lakes, the Yorkshire
Dales, the Peak District, the Howgills, Teesdale and Wales. On each walk,
there are three grades of walk each lead by one of the club's members.
Most walks include a sociable pub stop for a meal on the way home.
In recent years, a series of summer evening
walks proved very popular. Held on a Tuesday evening, these walks last
approximately 2 hours and return to a pub for a meal. These walks are
open to non-members of the club and are a great way to informally get to know a
few friendly faces!
The club also organises a series of weekends away to visit places which cannot be fully explored on a day trip. Recent examples include the west coast of Ireland, Snowdonia, the Isle of Arran, Callander, the Wicklow mountains, Pitlochry and Glencoe. A number of purely social events are also organised. In 2002, the club went abroad for the first time in it's history, with a trip to the mountains of Majorca. The success of this trip has being followed in subsequent years with trips to Spain, Greece, Tenerife and Crete.
